Planned maintenance shutdown at Imperial

Imperial is preparing for a scheduled maintenance shutdown at its Sarnia manufacturing site.

Process units will be coming offline in the next several days in preparation for the upcoming turnaround. Residents may notice increased flaring and noise while that's completed.

Imperial said the maintenance turnaround will allow them to make necessary repairs and upgrades to equipment to keep the site running safely and efficiently.

A peak of 1,200 contractors will be on site during the maintenance shutdown, which is expected to last a couple of months. Increased vehicle traffic to and from the site is expected.

"We appreciate the patience of the community as we undertake this period of heavy activity," said Public and Government Affairs Manager Kristina Zimmer in a notification through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts.

The refinery can process about 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily, to produce a range of petroleum products including gasoline and aviation fuel.
