Planned turnaround underway at NOVA St. Clair site

A planned turnaround is underway at the NOVA Chemicals St. Clair River Site in Corunna.

The first maintenance day at the Albert Street facility was Monday after NOVA began site preparations in late August.

VP Manufacturing East Rob Thompson said it's about $30-million Canadian in terms of economic impact.

"We've got some safety instrumented systems that we're putting in, we're redoing a bunch of our advanced process control, and we're doing a flare inspection and our boiler system inspection," said Thompson. "So the plant is down flat, and we're hoping to be up in the first week of October."

Thompson, who was a guest speaker at Tuesday morning's Kiwanis Golden K meeting, said it's something they do every six years. He said there's currently around 300 contract workers on site.

"So it's not massive, like when you talk about the that 1,700 we had at the facility, it's a smaller plant, but it's a regular turnaround."

In an email to Sarnia News Today, company spokesperson Julia Iacovella said residents can expect increased traffic flow around the site for the duration of the turnaround, especially during shift change times (6 a.m. to 8 a.m., and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

"Traffic management plans are continuously monitored should additional control measures need to be implemented to enhance safety and reduce risk," she said.

Iacovella added that this turnaround is a significant investment in the facility that will enhance its safety and reliability for years to come.
