Three students from Lambton County have each recently received $3,000 scholarships from the Municipal Retirees Organization of Ontario (MROO).
The non-profit organization describes itself as a non-partisan group that advocates for Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System pensioners.
Forty-four scholarships were awarded to students across the province this year. The largest scholarship of $5,000 was awarded to a student from Thornhill.
Local scholarship recipients included Addison Griffin of Sarnia, Kaitlyn H. of Camlachie, and Victor Tang of Wyoming.
Griffin is currently studying kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario, Kaitlyn (whose last name was omitted) is studying nursing at the University of Windsor, and Tang is studying criminology at King's University of Western Ontario.
MROO is divided into nine zones across Ontario, and scholarships are awarded to relatives of current MROO members in each zone.
“Education gets more expensive every year so these awards can have an enormous impact on a student’s life," said Zone 1 (Lambton County) Director Bruce Peacock in a media release.
The MROO scholarship program has been supporting Canadian students since 2006.
"These young students were chosen based on their academic achievements and efforts to give back to their communities," said MROO President Keith Robicheau. "We hope these scholarships will support each recipient in their studies and help them to achieve their academic and future career goals."
