Ministry orders issued after Sarnia explosion

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development has issued four requirements and four orders to AlumaPower Corporation following a small explosion in Sarnia last week.

Two people were taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries after an industrial accident was reported on Henry Drive on November 14.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, the company said the two personnel involved in the incident have since been released from the hospital.

"We are taking this incident very seriously, and are fully cooperating with the Ministry of Labour's investigation. The safety of our team comes first," read an emailed statement from AlumaPower Corporation.

The Ministry of Labour said two inspectors have been assigned to the case. However, officials were unable to specify what orders have been issued.

"To protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we can’t share specific details regarding the orders in the ongoing investigation at this time," read an emailed statement from the ministry.

It's also unknown how long the investigation may last as it depends on the complexity of the case.

"If a prosecution for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is warranted, charges will be laid in provincial court within two years of the date of the alleged offence," read the email.

Based on its website, AlumaPower is a Canadian-based cleantech startup, which was founded in 2017.
