Local brewers sip on success at provincewide competition

A few local breweries have earned recognition at the 2023 Ontario Brewing Awards.

The annual event was held on December 5 in Niagara Falls.

Imperial City Brew House in Sarnia received three silver awards for Craft Cerveza Mexican Lager (international lager), Winter Warmer (spiced beer), and Get Juiced (specialty beer).

Co-owner Craig Brodie said it's nice to be recognized.

"There's a lot of hard work behind the scenes that goes into what we do," said Brodie. "We don't take a lot of time for ourselves to take a step back and realize what we've done so that gives us the opportunity to do that and appreciate everything that we've done as friends and co-owners."

Brodie said the Craft Cerveza Mexican Lager is part of their regular rotation and is currently in the process of being rebranded to hopefully end up on LCBO shelves.

The Winter Warmer is available once a year around Christmas and Get Juiced was a beer they only produced once.

"There were a couple hundred pounds of fruit puree in that one so it was an expensive recipe to do," Brodie said. "It was the first sour we had ever attempted. We loved it, we did it one time, and now that we've won the award... I think we'll probably look at doing it again."

Earlier this year, Imperial City Brew House won a gold medal at the Canadian Craft Brewing Awards for their Chocolate Milk Peanut Butter Porter.

Black Gold Brewery in Petrolia won a silver award for their amber and brown American beer called "Angry Redhead" and a bronze award for a brown British beer called "What the Frack".

What the Frack had previously earned gold at the 2022 Ontario Brewing Awards.

Two Water Brewing Co. in Corunna received a bronze award for their strong American ale called "The Eye Opener."

The Ontario Brewing Awards includes 37 categories.
