Interfaith meeting aims to tackle homelessness

Local religious groups are trying to come up with ways to tackle the homelessness issue in Sarnia-Lambton.

An interfaith gathering is scheduled to take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grace United Church on Cathcart Blvd.

The goal is to hear from the community and come up with possible solutions.

Pastor Kenji Marui said there will be a presentation from Julie Ryan of the Indwell Charity.

"They provide supportive housing," said Marui. "I've worked on a couple of their projects in London. So, it's a chance for them to share some information on what they're all about."

Marui said it's a necessary discussion to have.

"Part of it is just to find out what is possible and what is out there going on," he said. "I'd like to think that as faith communities we can support works that are already happening. I don't know if we're really well-equipped to take on projects ourselves but certainly to know what is possible and what is available."

Marui said another goal is to bring different faith groups together.

"There are a lot of differences that we make a big deal out of on theology, or policy, or social practices," he said. "But, I think, the unhoused and homelessness is something that we can all agree that we need to work together on. I think if we can increase our cooperation, collaboration, and interaction with each other, Sarnia-Lambton would be the better for it."

Everyone is welcome to attend Thursday's session, and pre-registration is not required.
