Local bakery has sweet treat go viral

A bakery in Point Edward has generated a lot of traction on social media over their popular, but quick-selling, butter tart cupcakes.

Flakery Bakery, located on Louisa Street, recently shared its sweet creation on Facebook.

After just two days, the post reached over one million people and received over 46,000 engagements. The bakery also gained over 1,200 new followers on Facebook.

"The feedback has been insane! We have never seen something like this before where we had so many people responding to it. It's been so positive," said Bakery Owner Mary Beth Wigle. "It seems to have spread across the country... I even had somebody who commented from West Virginia [U.S.] that they've seen the post."

Wigle said the bakery has also received phone calls and emails from people in Alberta and along the East Coast, asking if they ship to other provinces.

"Unfortunately, that's not something we're able to do," she said. "We do make our buttercream icing in-house and it does need to be refrigerated, so it doesn't travel long distances well."

The bakery has made butter tart cupcakes two previous times but the social media post did not garner the same level of attraction.

"We saw about 80,000 or so views on it, but this time it exploded," she said.

The treat consists of a mini butter tart baked inside of a cupcake, topped with caramel buttercream and caramel drizzle.

"I like to come up with new ideas and fun and interesting things for us to try and hopefully bring some excitement to our customers," Wigle said.

Unfortunately for those who waited, the specialty cupcakes sold out within a few days, the last few were purchased on January 19.

Wigle said they can only make so many of them at a time and over 300 were baked this time around.

"It is something that we try to bring once or twice, maybe three times a year if we can," she said. "Something we always tell people is, if they follow our social media, we always post as soon as we have them."

The long-time Sarnia resident purchased the bakery over a year ago. The name of the establishment changed last spring from Cassie's Cottage to Flakery Bakery. They are open Tuesday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
