Lambton College hires from within to fill leadership role

The former dean of applied science, engineering technology and trades at Lambton College is stepping into a new role as interim senior vice president of academic and student success.

Dave Machacek's new position was officially announced earlier this week as he replaced Mary Vaughan, who accepted a position at Sheridan College. Vaughan joined the school's leadership team in July 2021.

"I'm just really happy to have the opportunity to be a part of this college. I've seen so much growth in the last few years and I'm really looking forward to continuing to do that work," he said.

Machacek has been a member of Lambton College since 2018. During that time, he has helped launch seven new programs, two new apprenticeship streams, and has developed various partnership initiatives.

"We've seen a lot of growth in that portfolio," he said. "Now, it's a matter of trying to take that and continue to learn all of the wonderful other things that are happening at the college and to be a part of that and to help guide us to supporting this community and their students."

In his new role, Machacek will be responsible for planning, organizing, innovating, staffing, and managing Lambton College’s academic operations and student success.

At least one challenge Machacek may face is the potential impact of fewer international student admissions.

Although details are still being assessed, the federal government announced new restrictions earlier this year to cap the number of approved study permits for two years in an effort to stabilize Canada's growth.

"Whether they're international students or domestic students, we have a lot of great programs here that are really focused on what the economic needs are," he said.

Machacek also highlighted programs associated with skilled trades as there will be job opportunities due to upcoming retirement numbers and building projects expected to take place across the province.
