Sarnia Army Cadets show off skills at Ceremonial Review

Sarnia's Army Cadets will be recognized this weekend for all of their hard work.

The group's 121st annual Ceremonial Review is being held at Lambton College to showcase the dedication the cadets have put into the program.

It's scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 in the large gym.

The cadets will demonstrate the skills they've learned over the year, and some will be honoured with awards. The reviewing officer will be the Legion President.

Overall, there are 30 cadets, aged 12 to 18, in the local program and one will be graduating and moving on.

Training Officer Jeremy Kearney said it's always a great day.

"It's great when we get to hear back from students later on, telling us what they're doing next," said Kearney. "We always like to hear that they're going to be coming back to the program, as an adult member, to help the program keep going.

Kearney said the Army Cadets provide students with an amazing experience that they can't get many other places.

"We focus a lot on developing their leadership and a lot of the soft skills like time management," he said. "We want them to develop that and create future leaders for our youth as well as future leaders for future Canadians."

Kearney said he had some great experiences with the cadets.

"When I was a cadet, I had the opportunity to go to Whitehorse and spend my summer up there," he said. "I was the cadet correspondent and got to showcase what they do in Whitehorse."

The Cadet Program aims to develop the attributes of good citizenship, promote physical fitness, and stimulate interest of youth in sea, land and air activities with the Canadian Armed Forces.

The 102 Sarnia 1st Hussars is one of the longest running organizations in Sarnia, having been founded in 1903.

They meet Wednesday evenings between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. at the Armory located at 574 Confederation St.
