Candle believed to have sparked Rainbow Park fire

Sarnia Fire Rescue believes a candle is to blame for a fire at Rainbow Park on Friday morning.

Fire Prevention Officer Roel Bus said emergency crews were called to the homeless encampment just before 5 a.m. for a tent on fire.

"Because of the proximity of the tents to each other, the fire did spread to about four different tents," said Bus. "There was a tree involved as well that looked pretty scorched at the bottom."

Bus said because of the material of the tents, the flames extended almost to the new fencing at the playground.

Crews were able to put out the fire relatively quickly.

He said it's difficult to put a monetary value on the loss because the contents of each tent aren't fully known.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

City of Sarnia Communications Manager Steve Henschel told Sarnia News Today, the affected tree has been taped off and forestry crews will work to remove it early next week.
