Thedford structure fire results in significant damage

Damage is estimated at $250,000 following a drive shed fire in Thedford on Wednesday.

Lambton Shores Fire Chief James Marshall said on arrival, volunteer firefighters found a building, approximately 24' x 24' (576 square feet), fully engulfed in flames.

"Currently, we're still looking through and doing interviews on origin and cause for the fire, but with the extent of loss it is likely to be an undetermined fire," said Marshall.

Marshall said the building, on Dumfries Street, had several things inside.

"It was an older garage, so it was much like all of our garages filled with a little bit of this and that. There was a few different shelving units, with tools, etcetera. No animals or anything like that were injured in the loss," Marshall said.

No humans were injured either.

"We had a lot of help from neighbours who were moistening down their sheds and yards and whatnot to help keep the fire from spreading. Because, as I said, it was well involved. It was a very quick moving fire from the time it was called in, to the time that crews arrived on scene," he said.

Marshall said the Thedford and Northville fire departments initially responded, and Arkona crews were called in later for further support.

He reminds residents that fires can happen at any time.

"This [fire] moved really, really quickly. It's a great reminder when we see how fast fires move to ensure that folks have working smoke and CO [carbon dioxide] alarms in their house, because if you don't have that quick notification and you're not out by the time we get there... it could be a pretty bad day," Marshall said.
