No charges after alleged incident investigated at Bright's Grove YMCA camp

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario says no charges have been laid following an investigation into an alleged incident at its St. Michael's school age program in Bright's Grove.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, Vice President of Communications Elyse Sheare said the organization couldn't comment on the specifics of police investigations or confidential personnel information.

But, Sheare could confirm that on July 25, they were made aware of an alleged incident involving a staff member and a child in the school age summer day program, which was reported by a parent.

"When we received this allegation, we took immediate action by engaging with the Children’s Aid Society (CAS), the Ministry of Education, and the Sarnia Police Service. We also immediately placed the staff member on paid leave pending the results of the investigation," said Sheare.  "Due to the nature of the allegation, CAS passed the information over to the Sarnia police, and we fully cooperated with their investigation. At this point, the police have concluded their investigation, and no charges have been laid," she added.

Sheare added an internal review of their hiring process was conducted to ensure all protocols, including criminal background and reference checks, were followed correctly.

"We can confirm that those measures were properly completed," she said.

Sheare said the program was not initially closed, however some families chose to withdraw their children.

"In those instances, we offered them alternate care options with other Y programs. The program was later closed due to low numbers," she said.

Sheare said August 16 would have been the final day of programming regardless, as they typically provide the school board with at least two weeks to prepare for the return to school in September.

"The Y has policies and procedures in place to help ensure child protection, which are assessed annually and reviewed continuously with our staff. We’re committed to upholding the highest standards of childcare and protection and appreciate the trust and confidence that families place in us," she said.
