Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has stood by its decision to declare the parking lot on Victoria Street as surplus.

City staff were directed to initiate the transfer and disposition of land process, and donate the whole property to the County of Lambton for affordable housing projects in May.

The county sent the issue back to the city, proposing only a portion of the parking lot be transferred to the county so public parking at the site could be retained.

The request was received and filed.

Sarnia council has accepted a tender for shore protection improvements at the Ferry Dock Hill landing.

Van Bree Drainage and Bulldozing was awarded the $600,000 contract.

The redevelopment of Ferry Dock Hill is the first project of the Waterfront Master Plan.

It has been split into two phases. This contract is for phase one and includes cleaning up of the site of the former waterfront building and installing sloped armour stone revetment.

A $1.2 million contract has been awarded to DiCocco Contractors for Sarnia's downtown bus terminal at Bayside Centre.

The new terminal will update and beautify the area of George and Vidal Streets.

It will include a new central island, updated seating, shelters and gardens, and allow six buses to park simultaneously.

A $1.2 million contract was also accepted from Schouten Excavating to replace multiple water mains on Vidal Street South.

The work will be done in the area of Lasalle Line in phases.

The first phase includes replacing a water main that runs through a woodlot that has been prone to breaks and is adjacent to industrial pipelines.

City staff said the location has made repairs complicated and expensive.

The new water main will run along the road to make access easier in the future.

A pilot project has been approved for residents to drop off their yard waste, brush, garbage, large items, scrap metal, and e-waste at one site.

It will all be accepted at the Transco Recycling Facility on McGregor Side Road on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting September 7.

As a result the city's compost site will close on Saturdays.

The pilot project will run until April 1, 2025.

A plan has been approved to extend the multi-use trail along Confederation Street, east from Finch Drive to Upper Canada Drive.

Timing of the construction is still being finalized.

The Ministry of Transportation has included the plans in its reconstruction of the Confederation Line and Highway 40 intersection.

-----------------------------------------------------

City staff have been asked to investigate the costs to purchase and install playground equipment in the Queen Street park.

A report is expected at city council's September meeting.
