Sarnia marks 5th annual Trail & Ale for Rayjon

Trail and Ale race organizers are excited to celebrate the fundraiser's fifth anniversary on Saturday.

Participants can choose the five kilometre or 10km walk/run route, which goes north on the Howard Watson Nature Trail from Michigan Avenue, and along the Blackwell trails.

Race Director Erin Gilbert said about 140 people registered online before the cutoff on Wednesday night.

"But we will have race day registration from 9:15 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at the Rayjon tent," she said.

Walkers will start the race at 10 a.m. and runners begin at 10:30 a.m.

Gilbert said thanks to sponsors, there will be a 360 photo booth set up for participants at the start/finish line.

Money raised will go to Rayjon Share Care. The non-profit organization offers different services to help eliminate inequalities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

"They provide women with business loans, help empowerment, they also help with buildings," Gilbert said.

An after party with food and drinks will be held at Sports, behind Refined Fool on London Road, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Registered participants will receive one local craft beer.

Although the fundraiser does highlight local breweries, Gilbert said they do often see children participate in the race as well.

"We offer a free 5k event for kids 14 and under. So they will be getting a separate prize, obviously," chuckled Gilbert.

The fundraiser initially launched in Sarnia as a virtual event in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the event is now held in-person, a virtual race can be completed any time between September 1 and September 21.
