Hundreds looking for work attend local job fair

More than 1,000 people attended Lambton College's Mega Job Fair Thursday.

There were 1,200 people pre-registered for the event, excluding walk-in's looking to fill full-time, part-time and seasonal positions.

Paige Dickson said she's starting to look for a job because she recently began her program.

"I kind of want to get ideas on where I can go after graduation, who's hiring," Dickson said.

She believes the job fair is a good idea.

"I think it's amazing for students. They get to talk to employers, they're able to get an idea of what jobs are out there and employers are able to get to know students," Dickson said.

Shallee Malaluon is looking for a second part-time job.

"I'm an HR by profession so, I'm looking for a (job) which will be more of an office support, office managing or an admin type of job," she said.

Over 60 employers were set up at the job fair including, policing, health care and hospitality.

John Barrie with Blue Mountain, located west of Collingwood,  said roughly 200 to 300 people attended the resort's booth.

He said Blue Mountain is currently in the process of hiring seasonal staff.

"We are looking right now for hospitality, but we have multiple jobs, so if they're not sure they want we recommend they go onto our website and view maybe one of our 80 to 90 jobs that we have available," Barrie said.

He also said there has been an interest from job seekers.

"We've received quite a few resumes but a lot of people will go online directly and apply, so I would say by the time we get back tomorrow or by the weekend when people get around to applying we'll see a good number to choose from," Barrie said.

Lambton College hosts the job fair twice per year.

The next one will be held on January 22, 2025.
