Diwali fireworks permitted in City of Sarnia

It's welcome news for those who celebrate Diwali in Sarnia.

Fire Chief Jeff Weber has declared the holiday, on October 31, as a “Special Occasion Day” under the city's fireworks bylaw.

That means firework sales are permitted on Diwali and were also allowed seven days preceding it.

Sarnia Fire Rescue said private recreational fireworks will be permitted on private property from dusk to 11 p.m., as well as one day prior and one day following.

Fireworks prohibited under the bylaw are not permitted at any time.

They include silver salutes, cherry bombs, flash crackers, those with joke effects like exploding golf balls, bottle rockets, snap caps, and sprite bombs.

Diwali is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism.

The festival generally symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.
