SPS hosts 11th annual Cops for Cans food drive

The Sarnia Police Service is hoping to collect over 11,000 pounds of non-perishable items to support the Inn of the Good Shepherd during the 11th annual Cops for Cans food drive.

Officers will be stationed at four locations in Sarnia and Bright's Grove on Saturday, November 16 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Staff Sgt. Jim McCabe said police vehicles will be parked in front of each location with their lights on.

"Over the last 11 years, we've generated about 140,000 pounds of food that we've donated so we're [averaging] between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds a year," said McCabe. "There's a couple of years we've had more, some years we've had less."

This year's goal is to surpass last year's total of 11,558 pounds of food collected.

"There's a huge demand on the Inn's supplies this year so we're hoping that we can get a good turnout and help replenish the shelves and give it to those people that really need it," he said.

McCabe said monetary donations and household items will also be collected. Pre-packaged food items will also be available to purchase at participating stores.

Donation locations are listed below:

- Walmart Supercentre at 1444 Quinn Dr.

- Kyle’s No Frills at 889 Exmouth St.

- The Real Canadian Superstore at 600 Murphy Rd.

- Bright’s Grove Foodland at 2600 Lakeshore Rd.
