A longtime educator at Lambton College has been awarded a peace medal by the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario.
Susan Doughty was honoured as part of YMCA Peace Week, a yearly campaign focused on highlighting people and groups that lead the way in creating positive change.
The YMCA said over the past decade Doughty has "made a significant impact by fostering community connections and supporting international students, particularly women."
She's credited with founding the International Women’s Club (IWC) to empower female students through cultural exchange, professional development, and sustainability initiatives.
The YMCA said her leadership transformed the club from an informal group into a well-structured organization with clear governance and defined values.
Doughty also launched the Business Professionals Club to help international students, and the Sustainability Club to engage students in environmental projects and community service.
As a lead researcher, Doughty has worked on projects aimed at bridging cultural gaps and empowering communities, including work with Aamjiwnaang First Nation to address economic challenges, and efforts to connect newcomers with meaningful employment opportunities.
Other area recipients include Greg Horton, founder of The Casual Athlete in Strathroy, and Sean Horrell, Outreach Coordinator at 519Pursuit in London.
