Arrest in Sarnia sexual assault investigation

The Sarnia Police Service has made an arrest in connection to a sexual assault investigation earlier this week.

Matthew Holbrough, 26, of Sarnia was identified as the man who appeared in a short video clip of a person of interest, released on Wednesday.

Police said additional evidence was obtained linking Holbrough to the assault.

At the time of the offence, police said the accused was the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant in London for breaching bail conditions.

Police said at around 3 a.m. Tuesday, a man broke into a residence on Kathleen Avenue and stood naked beside a sleeping woman while holding a knife.

It's alleged there was a struggle and the victim was sexually assaulted but did not require medical attention.

Holbrough is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter and commit indictable offence, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of breach of recognizance.

He was held in custody for bail.

"The circumstances of this incident were very alarming, necessitating a community public safety advisory. Our officers deployed all available resources to gather important evidence, establish an identity, locate the individual, and make an arrest. We hope this swift resolution provides a small measure of relief to the victim and to those impacted by this criminal act," said Police Chief Derek Davis.
