Christmas in the Village celebrates 13 years

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in Point Edward celebrating the holidays with the 13th Annual Christmas in the Village.

The free family-friendly event is on Saturday, December 7.

Many of the usual holiday themed activities will return, like horse and buggy rides, face painting, s'mores and a campfire at Manley's Basics, and hot chocolate at the fire hall.

There will also be a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus at the community hall.

Village of Point Edward Mayor Bev Hand said there will also be some new things this year.

"We're actually closing Michigan Avenue between Monk and Livingston. So, that will add some more space, we'll have live entertainment and vendors in that closed section," she said.

There will also be an expanded gingerbread house competition and a travelling photo booth.

"There's a lot of different things for families to participate in," Hand said.

A complimentary shuttle, courtesy of Wright Bus Lines, will make stops at village shops and businesses starting and ending at the Livingston Street parking lot.

"It takes in everything Christmas in the Village has to offer, so that way you can get over to Manley's," said Hand. "It starts at the pergola at the waterfront park, so you can get around to all of the different businesses participating."

Albert's Fries will also be hosting its food drive and bake sale in support of the Inn of the Good Shepherd. Patrons can trade a non-perishable food item for a drink, small fry or hot dog.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Earlier this year, there were discussions about altering or cancelling the holiday tradition but it was later decided that council would keep it running as a community event as residents didn't want to see it go.

Meanwhile, on Friday there will be a community led initiative called Light up the cul-de-sac.

Hand said the theme is the Grinch and the Village will be donating hot chocolate.
