Sarnia-Lambton United Way makes a push for donations

With just days left in its annual fundraising campaign, the Sarnia-Lambton United Way is making a plea for donations.

The initiative has so far raised just over $1.26 million, or 85 per cent of this year's target.

Director of Development and Communications Ryan Doyle said right now, it looks as though they will not reach this year's objective.

"Hopefully we get pretty close to it," said Doyle. "It's tough not knowing some of the big numbers. We're going to get a pretty big corporate gift from NOVA that's going to push us a lot closer. I think by Wednesday we'll be able to confidently say if it's going to be 90 per cent or 95 per cent of the goal. And, hey maybe we'll make 100 per cent, like we're still looking for that swell of community support."

Doyle said they have just $220,000 left to go to reach the $1.487 million goal.

"It's kind of unfortunately the way it goes, if we don't make our goal there will be programs that will be on the chopping block or programs that will receive reduced funding from us which is really painful," he said.

The annual campaign helps fund 17 local agencies that provide 29 programs and services including Lambton Elderly Outreach, Sarnia-Lambton Rebound and the Salvation Army.

Doyle said donations can be made until the end of the year at the office on Lambton Mall Road.

With Canada Post employees returning to work on Tuesday, Doyle said he's hoping there are some donations waiting in the mail.

"Maybe that can push us closer so that's exciting," he said. "And just a reminder for people maybe nervous about putting their donation in the mail, even if the mail doesn't arrive until the new year, if it's post date in 2024 then you're still eligible for that tax credit in the '24 calendar year."
