Due to heavy snowfall in the forecast, the City of Sarnia has declared a significant weather event.
The notice was put into effect at around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Environment Canada's snowfall warning is predicting up to 20 centimetres of snow Wednesday evening and into Thursday, with peak snowfall rates of 2 cm to 4 cm per hour in addition to the risk of freezing rain.
The city said the declaration is made when "it is anticipated that approaching or current weather hazards have the potential to pose significant danger to road users within the community."
Snow removal is prioritized on designated primary routes to ensure the delivery of transit and access for emergency services. Secondary routes will be cleared afterwards.
Sarnia operates a fleet of 17 plows, five sidewalk plows, and four parking lot plows, in addition to utilizing the support of snow-removal contractors as needed.
We're reminded sidewalks not on priority maintenance routes are not maintained from November 1 to April 30, and street parking is prohibited overnight.
