The best high school curlers from across Ontario are in Sarnia this week.
The senior OFSAA championships are taking place at the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club, with 20 boys' and 20 girls' teams vying for provincial titles.
The Northern Vikings are not only the host school, but both of their squads earned their way into OFSAA by capturing SWOSSAA titles.
Sarnia's St. Patrick's girls and the Leamington boys teams also advanced to OFSAA, despite their SWOSSAA defeats.
Northern's boys' team is skipped by Carter Pruliere, and he's joined by lead Trevor Marut, second Jai Starrett, vice William Ross and alternate Sean Virostek.
Pruliere said curling runs in his family.
"My whole dad's family did it when they were growing up," said Pruliere. "He had four brothers and that kind of made them want to play it more. I started when I was six. I kind of started doing it as a family sport and I just got into it." Northern's girls' team is made up of skip Felix Roberts, vice Lindsey Janes, lead Rebecca Walker, second Abbie Chalmers and alternate Kennedy Policicchio.
Roberts said it'll be great to have home ice advantage in what will be her third consecutive OFSAA appearance.
"We know the way the ice curls and how fast and how slow it runs on certain areas of the ice," said Roberts. "That's a really big hand up on the competition. One of my teammates, Lindsey Janes, this is also her third year at OFSAA. It really just gives us an idea of what to expect going into it. It's always a lot of fun and I'm super excited."
