Point Edward Fire and Rescue (PEF&R) is reminding boaters of the importance of carrying all safety equipment onboard, including personal floatation devices.
The alert comes after they were dispatched to help with a water rescue on Lake Huron at around 3 p.m. Monday.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre called the PEF&R marine unit and Sarnia Fire Rescue about a disabled boat in the area of Telfer Road.
The boater was located near Murphy Road, about two kilometres from shore, and was able to get a motor functioning and make it to shore safely.
PEF&R said its services were not required on arrival.
The fire department said in an emergency, communication and navigation equipment can make a difference when it comes to being located by emergency services.
Marine radios can be used to contact the nearest Coast Guard station or communicate with other boaters in the area that can provide assistance.
Those who only have a mobile phone can dial *16 to contact the Canadian Coast Guard.
Once contact is made your GPS position can be relayed to emergency responders directly.
Marine flares can also be used to signal your position in the event of an emergency.
