Work to cap contaminated St. Clair River sediment finished

Contaminated sediment in the St. Clair River has been contained.

Work began in November to remediate three areas of concern identified in the St. Clair River, which contained mercury contaminated sediments.

The project included the placement of an erosion resistant cover, made of double washed gravel, on areas near the TransAlta (formerly Dow Canada) and Suncor’s sites, near property owned by Enbridge and Shell and near Guthrie Park in St. Clair Township.

Remediation work wrapped up last month.

"This is an important milestone in terms of being able to make progress in addressing two beneficial uses for the St. Clair River that are currently listed as being impaired-degradation of benthos and restrictions on fish and wildlife consumption," read a newsletter from the Friends of the St. Clair River.
