Crossings rebound at US-Canada border in March

The overall numbers are still way down from 2024, but crossings from Canada into the United States rebounded last month.

Figures released this week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection showed that 3,183,009 travellers crossed the land border into the US in March, an increase from almost 2.8-million crossings in February.

However, year-to-year comparisons still tell the story of fewer travellers crossing into the U.S. after the Trump administration threatened its closest ally and trading partner with tariffs.

Crossings were down from 4,093,073 travellers who crossed in March 2024, a 22.2 per cent decline year-to-year.

The story is the same in Detroit, the busiest entrance point on the northern border. CBP figures showed that 607,179 travellers entered the U.S. via the Ambassador Bridge or Windsor-Detroit Tunnel in March, down from 690,897 for the same month in 2024. Month-to-month, traffic rebounded from February with less than 514,000 travellers.

Truck traffic in Detroit, a vital part of the Canada-US trade relationship, was up to 108,000 vehicles in March. That's still down from 126,000 in March 2024.

At the Blue Water Bridge from Sarnia to Port Huron, 241,007 people crossed during March. That's up from 196,483 in February, but still down from 2024, which registered just less than 256,000 travellers.

Truck traffic to Port Huron bucked all the trends, going up year-over-year with 97,358 conveyances crossing this March, up from 70,200 in 2024. The comparison from February also shows an upward trend, with 83,300 that month.

The CBP's figures were current as of Wednesday, April 16.
