Awareness key in upcoming Steps for Life walk

Those organizing the 16th annual Steps for Life fundraising walk are hoping to raise more awareness about workplace tragedies and the impact they can have on loved ones.

Sarnia Steps for Life Chairman Mark Roehler said, as of a week ago, about 45 people registered for the event online, but they expect more people to sign up closer to the walk on May 3.

"Financially, we're doing really well. Our goal was $15,000, which we've already reached, which is great but we're looking for 100 walkers," he said. "In my mind, that's where we need to get the word out and have everyone aware of what this is all about and what it means."

Funds raised will go toward a national charity, Threads of Life, that supports families who have been impacted by work-related deaths, serious injuries, and occupational disease.

"My primary concern is to prevent the injuries from happening ... that's why getting as many walkers as we can to come out, it helps with the awareness," Roehler said.

One of the participants being highlighted during this year's walk is Carolyn Sim. Her spouse, Dan, passed away from severe injuries sustained in a fall.

"Being the spokesperson for the Sarnia Steps for Life walk gives me the opportunity to share how a workplace fatality impacted our lives,” said Sim. “It is my belief that by sharing my story, it will raise awareness about the importance of workplace safety and prevent someone else from being seriously injured or killed. By working together, we can ensure that everyone gets home safely to their families.”

The five-kilometre walk will be held on Saturday at Canatara Park, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Seaway Kiwanis Pavilion.

Registration can be done online ahead of time or on-site at 9 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle and a chair if they would like to sit during the opening presentation. A silent auction will also be held.
