Bluewater Health launch patient admission video

Bluewater Health is trying to make patients more comfortable during their hospital stay.

The hospital launched a new patient admission video which will provide insight on what they can expect during admission, care and discharge.

The video highlights key services, patient rights and responsibilities and introduces supports through Indigenous Navigation Services, Spiritual Care, interpretation services and the Patient Experience Office.

Manager of Patient Experience Alison Coy said the video will be shown at both sites in Sarnia and Petrolia.

"We were really careful to make sure that the content really provided information on both sites and we've out there giving staff the links and encouraging them to use it as part of the admission process there too," she said.

The video content ideas came from patients who have utilized the hospital.

Coy said Bluewater Health recognized there were gaps in knowledge and communication opportunities.

"The topics were guided by actual feedback and questions we frequently hear from patients and families and we also worked closely with our frontline staff, our patient experience partners and different departments to ensure the contents reflected the diverse needs and voices," she said.

The video was made in direct response from the feedback it has received over the years.

Coy said the contents included came from previous complaints, compliments and questions.

"Many shared that the hospital experience can feel overwhelming, especially when you're already dealing with illness or injury," she said. "Our goal is to reduce that anxiety, improve understanding and empower patients as active partners in their care."

There were common themes where hospital staff felt patient and family knowledge and participation could improve.

Coy believes patients will find the video easy to understand and allow information for hospital stays to be more accessible.

"I think [this] really allows patients and families to truly partner in their care decisions right from the day of admission, rather then not having those tools and that knowledge available to them to really participate in their care decisions," she said.

The content of the video will be reviewed on a regular basis.

To create the video the Bluewater Health Foundation donated $5,000 and it was created local company Paradox Images..

It is available online and will be broadcast on hospital TV's.
