Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding motorists, ATV users and boaters to wear their safety gear.
OPP have launched a week-long Canada Day safety blitz.
West Region OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said safety needs to be a priority for not only police, but motorists too, and reminds drivers to buckle-up.
"Over the last three years between 2022 and 2024, the loss of 188 lives on OPP-patrolled roads was either attributed to or a direct result of not wearing a seatbelt," said Sanchuk.
He said over the same three-year period, 43 of the 88 riders killed in off-road vehicle incidents in OPP jurisdiction were not wearing a helmet.
"If you're heading out on an ATV, if you're a motorcyclist or bicyclist, make sure that you wear a properly fitted helmet, make sure you wear your equipment because that equipment could save your lives," said Sanchuk."
OPP Marine will also be conducting patrols on area waterways.
"Unquestionably, the most underutilized piece of equipment among waterway users year after year is the lifejacket," said Sanchuk. "Of the 72 people who died in OPP investigated marine incidents in the last three years, 59 chose not to wear a lifejacket."
OPP have a zero tolerance for drinking while boating.
Impaired boating is a criminal offence and can result in licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and court costs.
The latest OPP safety blitz wraps up on Sunday, July 6.
