Special meeting to discuss supportive housing project

Sarnia city council is holding a special meeting surrounding a contentious supportive housing project.

Indwell Community Homes is planning to build 51 units at a vacant site on George Street, recently donated by the County of Lambton.

Local residents were disappointed public consultation was not held regarding the planned project beforehand, and voiced their concerns during an open house in June.

An Indwell representative recently told Sarnia city council that under the county's bylaws, public consultation was not required as the site was already zoned for multi-residential use.

During the same meeting, city council agreed to hold a public meeting on the matter. That's scheduled for Monday, August 11 at 10 a.m. in council chambers.

Those interested in speaking at the meeting, either in person or electronically, are asked to notify the clerk's office by 12 p.m. on Friday, August 8. Written comments can also be submitted to the clerk's office.

The city said the council-led public consultation does not constitute a statutory public meeting under the Planning Act, and at this time, no application has been filed with the city related to the George Street development.
