Arrest made in 'mischief rampage'

Sarnia police have charged a man following multiple separate reports of mischief and property damage.

According to police, the first call came in just before 6 a.m. on Monday when a resident in the area of Lakeshore Road and Modeland Road reported that they believed someone was trying to break into their home. When officers arrived, damage was discovered in the back of the home, which totalled an estimated $250.

While police were responding to that call, a second call came in from another house in the same area. It was determined that the same person damaged a birdfeeder and some ornaments at the second home, causing about $100 worth of damage.

A patrol officer, searching for the suspect, found him a short distance away from the homes and arrested him.

He was released by the courts following a bail hearing for the two incidents. The court imposed a curfew condition on the 34-year-old man, saying that he must remain in his residence between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In the man's case, his residence was a local shelter.

After the man's release, Sarnia police received additional calls in the same area of the city, where similar damage was discovered.

At the third residence, a planter pot had been damaged and a large cement fountain had been destroyed, causing an estimated $3,000 of damage. At the fourth residence, a large glass table had been smashed, causing about $1,000 of damage.

Police determined that the same man was responsible for those crimes. Officers went to the shelter that the man had claimed as a residence shortly after the start of his court-ordered curfew and found that he wasn't there, breaching his bail conditions.

Wednesday morning, police responded to a call from security at a Lambton Mall in relation to the same man. Officers were told that the suspect approached a woman outside the mall and asked for a cigarette. When the woman didn't give him one, police said the man began swearing at and threatening her.

The man was then arrested in relation to new offences. He faces several charges, including six counts of failing to comply with a probation order, four counts of trespassing at night, four counts of mischief under $5,000, failure to comply with a release order, and uttering threats to cause death.

After a second bail hearing, the accused continues to be held in police custody.
