Native Friendship Centre hosts reconciliation march

The Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre (SLNFC) will host a Truth and Reconciliation March on October 1, one day after the national day of remembrance.

Indigenous court worker Melissa Jack said registration will begin at 10 a.m., for those who signed up ahead of time to receive a shirt.

"We had a local artist, Red George, do our t-shirt design this year," said Jack.

However, all are welcome to attend the march, which will begin at 11 a.m. from the centre, located at 233 Lochiel St. Community members will walk to Paul Blundy Park, where a ceremony will be held.

Valarie Wabooze, a residential school survivor, is expected to speak during the event.

Jack said afterward, participants will gather at the Kiwanis Community Centre for refreshments.

Meanwhile, SLNFC members will be in Brantford on September 30 during National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

"Our centre is going to Woodland Cultural Centre, formerly the Mount Elgin Residential School," said Acting Executive Director Dan Falconer. "That'll give our members an opportunity to engage in their own self-healing and self-care to learn about their own family history and to engage in some healing work as well."

Falconer said Tuesday is a day for reflection and he hopes it's something everyone will do.

"We would also like to see our allies, our non-Indigenous people, get passionate about the cause, Every Child Matters," Falconer said. "I think that's something everybody can get behind."

The centre has been operating in Sarnia for nearly 20 years, offering cultural and community programming.

Blackburn Media Inc. will again participate in A Day to Listen on September 30, held in partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, where Indigenous voices will be amplified over local radio stations.

Lambton College will also hold a series of events on Tuesday to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

An Every Child Matters March was held in downtown Sarnia this past weekend and a walk was held at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation on Monday.
