A survivor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash will share his story of resilience and mental health awareness in Point Edward next week.
The Centre and Strong Allies, Stronger Communities Lambton College will host an event with Tyler Smith on Wednesday, October 8.
Executive Director Chantel Butterfield said it will be held at the Four Points Sheraton on Venetian Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"The Centre has a research project with Lambton College and we're trying to amplify men accessing services and destigmatize mental health support and also create a new narrative around masculinity and what it means to access support when you need it," Butterfield said.
The crash on April 6, 2018 killed 16 people and injured 13 others, when the hockey team's bus collided with a transport that went through a stop sign.
"Tyler's going to take us through his experience after the bus crash, just in terms of the traumatic experience that he had and how in sports culture and as a man... for him it was really about staying strong and pushing through, especially as a survivor of the crash," said Butterfield.
"He focuses a lot on how he minimized the things that he went through and just tried to push through, and get through... being grateful for being here... all of those kinds of things that go through your head," Butterfield said.
Tickets to Navigating Mental Health with Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash Survivor Tyler Smith are $20 per person.
They can be purchased at revelree.ca, but will also be available Friday on the concourse at the Sarnia Sting home game against the Niagara Ice Dogs at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
In addition to his advocacy work, Smith won season nine of The Amazing Race Canada in 2023.
