Habitat wrapping up one project, kicking off another in Forest

Ground has been broken on a new Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton project.

Lambton Shores Mayor Doug Cook said the upcoming development will be built in Forest.

"They're going to be building on Union Street, beside two existing habitat homes that were done in 2023," said Cook. "This one is going to be a four-plex. This is the first four-plex that habitat has undertaken in their builds. So, this is going to be a new venture for them to try and put something different into our community."

Cook said habitat builds have been really successful in his municipality.

"Habitat has done a lot of work with the local service groups in the area, and so they're always recruiting names and getting individuals signed up for these projects," Cook said.

Mayor Cook said they have a really good base of contractors they work with.

"They're hoping to have the doors installed and have it sealed by November, then after that construction would be for 2026 to be finished," Cook.

He said securing affordable housing for four families is really meaningful.

"That's one of our main focuses that we've been trying to push through Lambton Shores is affordable housing," he said. "Working with habitat is another opportunity for us to try to do that for the local folks."

In a video posted to Facebook, Habitat CEO David Waters said there will be noticeable construction there the next few weeks.

In the meantime, habitat is continuing interior work on a single family home on Wellington Street in Forest.

That project was made possible by grant funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
