Thanksgiving food drive comes at important time

The Inn of the Good Shepherd's annual Thanksgiving food drive is officially underway.

The campaign kicked off on Sunday, October 5, and will run through to Sunday, October 19.

Executive Director Myles Vanni said with fewer donations coming in and an increase in demand, the Thanksgiving food drive is an "important time" for them.

He said the food bank currently serves about 2,200 people per month.

"Those numbers are up from a couple of years ago. They haven't come back down at all, and when you look at the cost of food, you can see that the challenge is there for families to be able to get the food they need," he said. "But also, it has reduced the donations coming in."

Most needed items include: Kraft dinner, brown beans, canned pasta, dry pasta, large soups and stews, canned fruit, cereal, granola bars, crackers, and lunch snacks.

Donations can be dropped off in the bins at local grocery stores, churches, fire halls, or at the Inn on John Street or the Lodge on Confederation Street.

"For some folks, it might be easier to make a financial donation," Vanni said. "Of course, with the mail strike, some people are dropping their donations off but you could always go onto our website, click on the donate button."
