Ahead of the cold and flu season, vaccinations are opening up to the general public.
Lambton's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Karalyn Dueck said as of Monday, October 27, residents can get their flu shot through their family doctor.
"Many family doctors and nurse practitioners offices run influenza vaccine clinics," said Dr. Dueck. "They can also provide you with RSV vaccines if you're aged 75 years and older for the general public. Or, you can receive influenza and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time from around 30 pharmacies across Lambton."
Dr. Dueck said Lambton Public Health also offers pediatric clinics as well as mobile clinics focused on specific populations, such as homebound individuals and First Nation communities.
Infants, seniors and individuals with a chronic health condition are considered to be at most risk from the flu.
"Last year was an anomaly in terms of the influenza activity," said Dr. Dueck. "From what I've heard at the provincial level, we aren't expecting to see as much influenza activity but, it's really hard to predict the future so it could change but hopefully we won't experience so much this year again."
Residents are reminded to continue to prevent spread of the viruses by washing hands with soap frequently, keeping ill family members home from school or work and cleaning regularly touched surfaces like door handles and computer keyboards often.
Dr. Dueck said early flu symptoms include a fever, body and muscle aches and chills.
You might also experience headaches and fatigue.
