Timely reminder to check smoke alarms

Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend.

Clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 2.

The change means morning will be bright an hour earlier and darkness will set in earlier in the evening.

Sarnia Fire Public Education Officer Mike Otis said they use the biannual time change to remind residents to replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

"When you're changing your clocks anyway, it's a good time to remember to check your smoke alarms," said Otis. "You should be testing them monthly, but change the batteries at least once a year. And make sure that your alarms are less than 10 years old. All smoke and CO alarms expire every ten years or sooner, that's from the manufacturer's date on the alarm."

Otis said while the fire department is busy all year round, there are certain types of fires that are more prevalent in the fall and winter months.

"Anything to do with home heating," said Otis. "Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditionally two busy days. Just because we're very busy cooking, we're distracted, so we always want to remind people to look when you cook and pay attention when you're cooking."

In Ontario, all homes are required to have working smoke alarms on every level, and outside all sleeping areas. As well, CO alarms are mandatory outside sleeping areas of homes with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.

The first week of November also marks CO Awareness Week.

CO poisoning is the leading cause of accidental death in Canada.
