Local United Way hoping for a busy Giving Tuesday

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way is hoping to see a bump in donations on Giving Tuesday.

Volunteer President Jason Killingsworth said the campaign wraps up in just over four weeks, ahead of the new year.

He said to date, they've raised $979,000 or 65 per cent of the $1.5 million target. That's about $90,000 behind last year's pace.

"We are very grateful for every gift we have received, but the reality is we are very behind where we need to be," said Killingsworth.

He said in the past, the organization has seen an increase in campaign donations on Giving Tuesday.

"This is an annual global day of generosity that occurs on the first Tuesday of December, after major shopping events to shift the focus to giving rather than spending," said Killingsworth. "On this day, we encourage people to give back to our community through donations, volunteering or acts of kindness."

As part of the Giving Tuesday initiative, Libro employees will be joining Red Cross volunteers in the community to deliver Meals on Wheels.

"In addition to releasing some of their employees to volunteer, Libro will also be making a financial donation to recognize the day," said Killingsworth. "This community has a long history of stepping up when it matters most, and we're hopeful we can close this gap together."

The United Way provides funding for 28 local programs offered through 16 agencies across the community including River City Vineyard, Sarnia-Lambton Rebound and Lambton Elderly Outreach.
