Canada Post collecting letters to Santa at annual parade

Canada Post workers will be marching in the Sarnia Kinsmen Santa Claus parade with one goal in mind, to collect as many letters for the big guy as possible.

They'll be out with their sacks, and one will even be dressed as a postal box, gathering Christmas letters from the kids.

Spokesman Mark Kohoutek said they usually receive between 100 and 200 letters.

"The weather, we always thought, might be a problem but even on the coldest years, people are out," said Kohoutek. "Sarnia has a great Santa Claus parade, and Canada Post loves to be a part of it."

Kohoutek said it's always a fun time for the workers.

"It's a lot of work, we've got to make sure Santa gets to read everything and we might sneak a cookie here and there while we're at it," he laughed. "We all get together and make it a group effort. It's a lot of fun."

Kohoutek reminds everyone to make sure every letter is properly labeled with the child's full name and a return address.

"It's just interesting that in this age of the digital world, the letters are still there," said Kohoutek. "Kids still love to sit down and write letters and I think that's a great thing. Something about having a pen and paper and holding it in your hand is cool. When the kids get to hold a letter to Santa, it means a lot to them."

Each letter should be addressed to Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada, H0H 0H0.

No postage is required.

The parade will be held on December 6, beginning at 6 p.m., and those who can't make it can drop off letters at the post office at 105 Christina Street South.

The plan is for the parade to start from Christina and Exmouth Streets as always, but the route might change because of construction.

Canada Post said the deadline for local regular parcels is expected to be around December 19, while Priority/Xpresspost deadlines are likely around December 22.

The organization said it's always best to mail items as early as possible to ensure they arrive on time.
