Canada Post and mail carriers' union reach tentative agreement

After strikes, lockouts, and years of negotiations Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have reached tentative agreements for two bargaining units.

On Monday, the Crown Corporation announced tentative deals for both the Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier) bargaining units.

The deals include higher wage increases, enhanced health benefits and job security, and a new operating model for weekend deliveries.

There will be a 6.5 per cent wage increase in the first year of the contract, which includes the five per cent already received, and a three per cent increase in year two. The third, fourth, and fifth years of the deal would see pay raises which match the annual inflation rate.

The enhanced benefits include six non-carry over personal days locked into the collective agreement, for a total of 13 personal days, and better income replacement for injury-on-duty leave and leave under the short-term disability program.

Both agreements are for five years and would be in effect until January 31, 2029.

During the ratification process, both parties have agreed that there will be no strikes or lockouts.
