Masking introduced at Bluewater Health as flu cases surge

Masking protocols have been implemented in all clinical areas of Bluewater Health in response to a significant increase in influenza cases, both locally and across the province.

As of December 22, staff, professional staff, volunteers, and students will be required to wear a mask with eye protection in clinical areas within two metres of all patients.

Patients at the Sarnia and Petrolia hospitals must also wear a mask when leaving their rooms.

Meanwhile, visitors are strongly encouraged to wear a mask, particularly in clinical areas and when within two metres of patients.

“At Bluewater Health, we are seeing the impacts of this severe influenza season firsthand,” said Chief of Staff and Vice President of Medical Affairs Dr. Michel Haddad. “Masking in clinical areas is an important step to reduce the spread of respiratory illness and help protect patients, families, and healthcare workers – especially those most vulnerable to severe outcomes.”

Provincial surveillance data show current influenza positivity rates at 33.8 per cent, with 2,239 hospital admissions across the province.

The local organization said health officials anticipate continued increases in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases over the coming weeks.

“Influenza is not a mild illness, particularly this season,” said Dr. Haddad. “Vaccination is an effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. We strongly encourage community members to ensure they are up to date with their influenza vaccine.”

Community members are also encouraged to stay home when sick and to practice good hand hygiene.

The masking requirement will be reviewed regularly based on respiratory illness trends.
