Heavy rain and strong winds expected

Heavy rain is expected across parts of southwestern Ontario, prompting Environment Canada to issue rainfall warnings for Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex.

Total rain and freezing rain amounts 30 to 60 millimetres with locally higher amounts possible in Sarnia-Lambton.

Environment Canada said Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex could receive rain amounts totalling 20 to 40 millimetres.

Rain, heavy at times, will begin Sunday morning and continue through the afternoon and evening.

The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.

The national weather agency said precipitation may begin as freezing rain briefly before changing over to rain with little ice accretion expected.

There's also the risk for a few isolated thunderstorms.

Localized flooding is possible and some roads may become impassable.

Environment Canada said the rain will ease overnight.

We're also being advised of strong winds on Monday with the passage of a cold front. A wind warning has also been issued for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

Strong southwest winds of up to 90 kilometres an hour are possible beginning Monday morning.

Gusty winds can cause damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters. Local utility outages are also possible.
