The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has issued a flood watch for the entire watershed.
The conservation authority says above-seasonal temperatures and five to 20 millimetres of rain over the past week has resulted in deteriorated snowpack and elevated water levels, with some areas having spilled into natural floodplain and low-lying areas.
There is more fain the forecast Friday and possibly Saturday.
" This recent rainfall and snowmelt has reduced the soil’s capacity to absorb further rainfall, which could lead to increased runoff," read the flood watch. "Water levels are anticipated to rise rapidly and may lead to pooling on roads and fields."
Any remaining ice in watercourses may block flows during a runoff event and increase flooding potential.
We're reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold swift moving water, and to keep children and pets away from the water.
The conservation authority said it will continue to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
