Lambton College has launched an Ethical and Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tool, developed through its Digital Transformation Lab.
The tool positions the college to be among a small number of postsecondary institutions in Canada with this kind of internally developed ethical AI framework.
It embeds ethics directly into the AI development lifecycle, and is currently being used to ensure AI systems developed through the college's collaborative research initiatives are transparent, fair, and accountable from the very beginning.
Digital Transformation Lab Manager Adesh Shah said responsible AI is no longer optional, it is essential.
"This tool allows us to proactively identify and mitigate potential risks while ensuring that AI solutions developed at Lambton College meet the highest ethical standards for industry and community partners," Shah said in a news release about the tool.
The college said the tool is grounded in the Government of Canada’s FASTER principles (Fair, Accountable, Secure, Transparent, Educated, Relevant), enabling early and ongoing assessment of algorithmic bias in AI applications.
"All data collected for training and testing AI models is fully anonymized, securely stored on local servers in Canada, and used exclusively for research purposes. The tool supports structured evaluation of datasets and AI outputs against established bias indicators and provides full traceability across data and model pipelines, ensuring accountability and Human-In-The-Loop at every stage of design and development," the news release added.
