Students invited to start businesses through Summer Company Program

If you're a student between 15 and 29-years-old with a summer business idea, now is your chance to receive help and funding to launch it.

Applications are being accepted for the 2026 Summer Company Grant Program, which is delivered in partnership with the Ontario government.

Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) CEO Matthew Slotwinski said the program provides a practical introduction to entrepreneurship.

"It helps young people have the confidence to start their business idea, build real skills, and understand what it takes to operate responsibly and sustainably," Slotwinski said. "Moreover, the experience gained from being the boss of your own summer job exposes students to both pressures and opportunities that cannot be replicated through traditional summer employment.”

In addition to grant funding of up to $3,000, students receive training and mentorship.

SLEP's Business Enterprise Centre Manager Alison Minato said the program has been offered in Sarnia-Lambton for over 27 years.

"It's a long running program, and for good reason, because every year we see some really great, enthusiastic, entrepreneurial students come through the program," Minato said. "They're looking to launch businesses, anywhere from lawn care, to swimming lessons, to nail salons, and even an AI (Artificial Intelligence) firm last year."

To apply, students are asked to submit a business plan outline and a budget.

"If anybody needs any help at all, I am here to work through the business plan template with them," she said. "Applicants need to fill that in with their idea and show some of the research that they've done. Show that they have an understanding of how much money it will take to start it up, how they're going to market it and we also ask them to do a budget for the summer as well."

Eligible applicants must live in Lambton County, be returning to school in the fall, and be prepared to commit to running their business full-time during the program period.

There is an early bird application deadline of March 23, 2026, and Minato expects they'll start awarding grants in April.

"Last year, we were able to offer grants to six youth in the program. This year, we're not sure how many grants we will have available. We just haven't had confirmation from the province yet."

Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until all available funding has been allocated.
