Wanted: Lambton County Lake Huron sunset photos

The Lambton Heritage Museum wants to see the best Lake Huron sunset photos in Lambton County.

Curator/Supervisor Dana Thorne is inviting photographers, nature lovers, and Lake Huron enthusiasts to showcase their best shots in a new photo contest.

"Our feature exhibition this year is called Bluewaterland," Thorne said. "It's going to look at the history of the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. One of the things people get most excited about with Lake Huron, is the incredible sunsets. I wanted to be able to capture those sunsets, bring them into our exhibition and celebrate one of the things that makes Lake Huron so special."

Submissions will be judged on colour, composition, and creativity.

"We'd love to see people in the pictures, we'd love to see animals, just beautiful pictures of the coast as well," Thorne said. "We're looking for people to get creative with how they capture those sunsets of Lake Huron."

The winning photo submissions will be featured in the Huron Glow Collection of the upcoming exhibition.

"Usually iPhones take pretty good pictures these days, but we're looking for at least a 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) resolution so that the pictures can be enlarged and displayed," Thorne said.

One grand prize winner will receive a $50 Tourism Sarnia-Lambton gift certificate, and two honourable mentions will receive a $25 Tourism Sarnia-Lambton gift certificate.

Up to ten additional photographs will be selected for the display.

"March 8 is the deadline for submissions," said Thorne. "If they go to lambtonmuseums.ca/sunsets there's a form to fill out to attach the pictures. Each person can submit one picture for the photo contest."

All submission winners will receive a free family pass to the museum to see their work on display, as well as a framed photograph of their work once the exhibition closes.

Bluewaterland will run from May 13 to October 18, 2026.

"Some of the other topics that we're going to be looking at in the exhibit include shipwrecks and nautical disasters. We're going to look at Sarnia shipbuilding history and the Rum-Runners who used to smuggle alcohol across the river during prohibition and surf culture in Grand Bend."
