Students vote for change in mock election

In a mock election, students also voted to elect Carrie McEachran as Sarnia's new mayor.

According to CIVIX, a non-partisan registered Canadian charity that runs a student vote program, 422 students voted for McEachran, while incumbent Mike Bradley received 371 votes.

The results mirrored Monday's actual 2026 municipal election, in which McEachran defeated Bradley, Bill Dennis, and Scott Molson.

Thirteen schools participated in the mock election for the City of Sarnia.

Students also voted for Terry Burrell, Lo-Anne Chan, Richard (Dick) Felton, and Tammy Mathieson for city council.

Although there are only four city/county council positions, students elected five people: Bill Anning, Patrick Coutu, Mario Fazio, Chrissy McRoberts, and Mike Stark.

Meanwhile, mock election results were also released for two other Lambton County schools.

In Lambton Shores, students at four participating schools voted to re-elect Doug Cook and have Marilyn Smith as deputy mayor.

On Monday, Jeff Wilcox was named as mayor-elect, and Dan Sageman was voted in as deputy mayor.

In Plympton-Wyoming, students at three schools voted to elect Tim Wilkins as mayor and Brad Zanthingh as deputy mayor.

However, registered voters re-elected Gary Atkinson as mayor on Monday, and Netty McEwen as deputy mayor.

As of 6:30 p.m. on Monday, a total of 1,290 schools had submitted their Student Vote results, representing 200 municipalities in Ontario. The program empowers students to engage in the democratic process in a parallel election.

Full results can be found on the student vote website.
