The Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League has a new commissioner.
The league announced in a media release on August 1 that Craig Spada will be taking over the commissioner's role from interim commissioner Tim Simmons.
Spada has a wealth of experience in the game, having been a former official who refereed 247 NHL games, as well as the AHL's Calder Cup Final and the CHL's Memorial Cup Final.
The league says that Spada's hiring "demonstrates the GOJHL’s ongoing commitment to player development and creating a thriving environment for young athletes."
Spada had already implemented changes in the league prior to his appointment as commissioner, including "a first responder program to enhance player safety and the realignment of conferences to improve both player and fan experiences."
“As I step into this new role, I want to emphasize that player growth remains a top priority for the league," said Spada. “The GOJHL’s ability to be a leader in player development is what makes me most proud to be a part of this league. We have consistently moved players onto the OHL and helped them further their skills and careers.”
Initially, Spada served as the director of player safety for the GOJHL.
“I am pleased and proud of where the GOJHL has come over the past few years,” added Spada. “Much more is ahead for the league’s players, and I thank the GOJHL family for this opportunity.”
