City And School Paying Chrysler

The City of Windsor and local school boards owe Chrysler Canada $8-million in tax rebates.

City Treasurer Onorio Colucci says the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) originally assessed the company's Windsor plant at $85-million in 2008, which was appealed by Chrysler, and has now been reduced to $65-million. Another assessment in 2012 has come in at $75-million.

Colucci explains: "There's currently approximately $13-million in our reserve for tax appeals. So it won't have to hit the tax levy this year. There won't be any spike."

Just $5.7-million of the rebate is coming from the city reserve, while the other $2.3-million will be split between the school boards.
