Windsor police say the suspected gunman was the one who called 911 to tell police about a suspicious man at McDonald's on Howard Ave. Sunday morning.
Deputy Chief Vince Power says the man, now in custody on the US-side of the border, is a 22-year-old from Windsor.
Power is pleased with the effort put forth by veteran officers, dealing with a suspect who they now know was only armed with a pellet gun. "Officers were faced with what they thought was a deadly threat and they showed tremendous restraint, while constantly reassessing the situation. Though at one point, the officers considered the use of lethal force, they opted not to, as they continued to assess the environmental and situational factors."
Power explains that the suspect got away by driving recklessly over curbs and medians before heading onto the Ambassador Bridge where he was shot and apprehended by border authorities.
The 22-year-old faces weapon and driving-related charges in the event that he returns to Canada.
The investigation is on-going.
